A catastrophic fire and explosion struck the Violanta biscuit manufacturing facility near Trikala in central Greece in the early hours of January 26, claiming five lives and highlighting serious workplace safety concerns. The blaze erupted around 4 a.m. at the production site, approximately 320 kilometers (200 miles) north of Athens. Thirteen employees were working the overnight shift when the emergency began.
