An armed suspect was stopped by Secret Service agents after attempting to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, forcing organizers to evacuate and cancel the event.

The incident occurred roughly 20 minutes after President Trump and the first lady arrived at the annual gathering, commonly referred to as the “Nerd Prom.” Federal authorities said the suspect rushed a secured checkpoint near the main ballroom before law enforcement intervened.

What Happened

Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was identified as the suspect by investigators. Allen, a teacher and video game developer who graduated from the California Institute of Technology, was carrying a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives when he approached the security perimeter.

Secret Service agents confronted Allen inside the hotel lobby before he could reach the crowded ballroom. A violent struggle ensued, with gunfire erupting during the altercation.

One Secret Service agent was struck during the confrontation but was protected by body armor. The agent was transported to a nearby hospital and listed in stable condition, officials said.

Security Response and Evacuation

Security teams immediately ordered a full evacuation of the venue as armed officers conducted a sweep of the hotel to eliminate any additional threats. Allen sustained minor injuries and was taken into federal custody.

The White House Correspondents’ Association canceled the remainder of the event due to ongoing security concerns, despite initial consideration of resuming programming. Officials announced plans to reschedule the dinner with enhanced security protocols.

Official Statements and Investigation

President Trump commended Secret Service personnel for their response, stating their quick actions prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. “The Secret Service did an amazing job,” Trump said, condemning the suspect’s actions and endorsing the decision to prioritize attendee safety.

Federal investigators have begun examining Allen’s background, motivations, and recent activities. Authorities are searching his California residence and reviewing communications he reportedly sent to family members before the incident.

Investigators currently believe Allen acted alone and have found no evidence suggesting a coordinated plot or ongoing threat. The attempted attack has prompted officials to review security procedures surrounding major political events in Washington.
