House Unanimously Passes Bill To Prioritize Veteran SurvivorsšŸ‘‡šŸ‘‡

TheĀ U.S. House of RepresentativesĀ achieved a significant bipartisan milestone this week by unanimously passingĀ H.R. 1228, also known as theĀ ā€œPrioritizing Veterans’ Survivors Act.ā€Ā The legislation, which cleared the floor with a resounding 424-0 vote, is designed to restore theĀ Office of Survivors Assistance (OSA)Ā to its primary position as a lead adviser to theĀ Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Originally sidelined by administrative changes in 2021, theĀ OSAĀ serves as a critical advocate for the families of deceased service members. Sponsored byĀ Rep. Juan CiscomaniĀ ofĀ Arizona, the bill aims to ensure that survivor benefits and policies remain a top priority within theĀ Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)Ā as the measure moves to theĀ SenateĀ for consideration.

Concurrently,Ā VA Secretary Doug CollinsĀ is addressing the future of the department amidst broader government efficiency efforts.Ā CollinsĀ recently voiced support for theĀ Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative involvingĀ Elon Musk, to optimize federal operations with “fresh eyes.” However, he was quick to dispel “misinformation” regarding potential cuts to veteran benefits or health care deterioration.Ā CollinsĀ asserted that theĀ VAĀ has actually redirected nearlyĀ $98 millionĀ toward direct care and preserved 300,000 mission-critical positions to maintain service quality. He categorically denied rumors of layoffs at theĀ Veterans Crisis LineĀ and encouraged veterans to trust officialĀ VAĀ communication over political rhetoric onĀ Capitol Hill.

WhileĀ CollinsĀ promised a commitment to veteran care, he also announced a program for deferred resignation or retirement for employees, signaling upcoming workforce reductions later this fiscal year. In separate legislative news, theĀ HouseĀ passed theĀ ā€œDetain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Actā€Ā with a 265-148 vote. Led byĀ Rep. Jeff Van DrewĀ ofĀ New Jersey, the bill mandates the federal detention and deportation of any illegal immigrant who assaults law enforcement.Ā Van DrewĀ emphasized that such behavior warrants immediate exclusion from the country to uphold the rule of law and protect institutional integrity.
