A dangerous escalation is unfolding in the Persian Gulf as Iran has launched direct attacks on multiple U.S. military bases in the region, according to announcements from Iranian state television and military sources.

Iranian media, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), reported strikes using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting key American installations. The attacks appear to mark a significant intensification of regional tensions, with several Gulf nations responding by closing airspace and urging civilians to seek shelter.

In the United Arab Emirates, a powerful explosion rocked areas near Abu Dhabi, with reports of Iranian ballistic missiles targeting Al Dhafra Air Base, a major U.S. facility hosting American air assets. Large blasts were heard, and the UAE authorities closed the country’s airspace amid the chaos. Debris from interceptions and secondary explosions caused disruption in civilian areas, though full damage assessments remain unclear.

Smoke rose over the Al Jufair district in Manama, Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters. Local authorities confirmed a missile strike on the naval support facility, with reports of damage to warehouses, communication equipment, and radar systems. Bahrain has activated air-raid warnings and advised residents to avoid military zones.

In Qatar, the Interior Ministry issued a shelter-in-place order as air defenses, including Patriot missile systems, intercepted incoming threats aimed at Al Udeid Air Base—the largest U.S. military installation in the Middle East and headquarters for U.S. Central Command. Qatar also closed its airspace to commercial traffic. While many projectiles were downed, at least some impacts or near-misses were reported, triggering explosions and heightened alerts.

Authorities in several Gulf countries have urged citizens to stay indoors and steer clear of military sites. Schools in affected nations have shifted to remote learning, and U.S. embassies have issued shelter-in-place advisories for American personnel.

These strikes follow a pattern of Iranian retaliation amid broader Middle East conflicts involving Israel and the U.S. Iranian officials have claimed successful hits on infrastructure at Al Dhafra, Al Udeid, and the Bahrain naval base, though independent verification of casualties and exact damage is limited. U.S. Central Command has not yet issued a full public statement on the extent of impacts.

The situation remains fluid, with fears of further escalation that could draw in more regional actors and disrupt global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz. International observers are closely monitoring developments as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate appear stalled.
