GOP Businessman Leading Kansas GOP Governor’s Race

A political outsider has surged to the forefront of Kansas’s crowded 2026 Republican gubernatorial primary, upending expectations and injecting fresh energy into the race for governor.

Philip Sarnecki, a Johnson County businessman and first-time candidate, has shattered fundraising records in Kansas gubernatorial history. In roughly four months, his campaign raised approximately $3 million — an extraordinary sum that far outpaces other Republican contenders. This includes $2.7 million in direct contributions and another $250,000 from supportive organizations. Sarnecki, who entered the race in early September 2025, now holds about $2.3 million in cash on hand, positioning him with significant resources for early advertising, voter outreach, and ground operations.

“Our campaign has raised the most money in Kansas gubernatorial history, and we did it in far less time than every other Republican candidate in the field,” Sarnecki said in a statement. “There’s an incredible energy around our campaign. Kansans are tired of losing and they’re tired of career politicians.”

He added, “Kansans are hungry for a business leader and an outsider — someone like President Trump — to win this race. The support we’ve received across Kansas proves that to be true. We’re just getting started. It’s our time to win.”

Sarnecki serves as a wealth management executive and president of RPS Financial Group (also described in some reports as managing partner of RPS Benefits by Design). He has centered his campaign on being “untethered from the Topeka political establishment.” His platform emphasizes tax relief, deregulation to spur small-business growth, education reforms that prioritize parental rights and school choice, and a broader call for fresh leadership in state government.

Analysts note that Sarnecki’s rapid rise echoes the anti-establishment sentiment that fueled Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential victory — a populist wave driven by voter frustration with entrenched insiders. His fundraising dominance has dramatically shifted dynamics in a primary that once featured several veteran officeholders with statewide name recognition. Sarnecki, who has also contributed personal loans exceeding $2 million to his effort, has quickly emerged as the de facto frontrunner among Republicans.

The timing of his ascent carries particular symbolism. As Sarnecki channels voter discontent with political insiders, Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly — term-limited and unable to seek reelection — used her final State of the State address in January 2026 to advocate for moderation and bipartisanship. She urged lawmakers to “turn the volume down,” prioritize listening over yelling, and govern from the middle.

“I’m here because Kansans were looking for someone who would turn the volume down, to do more listening than yelling, to bring people together, to compromise and govern from the middle,” Kelly said. She highlighted the state’s “civil, decent” character and pointed to bipartisan accomplishments under her tenure, including hundreds of passed bills and collaborative efforts like infrastructure projects.

Kelly warned that “toxic politics” could undermine Kansas’s progress, stressing the value of setting aside differences for the common good. “To land the Chiefs, we all put politics aside,” she noted, referencing a stadium deal in Wyandotte County as an example of cross-aisle cooperation.

With his record-breaking financial haul and a message resonating among restless GOP voters seeking change, Sarnecki has established himself as the candidate to watch in the Republican primary. The eventual nominee will face the Democratic successor to Gov. Kelly in what promises to be one of Kansas’s most pivotal gubernatorial contests in years.
