NASCAR icon Greg Biffle and his family killed in North Carolina plane crash

A Tragic End to a Routine Flight: The Greg Biffle Plane Crash

The sky lit up with a sudden, horrifying flash. What began as a routine takeoff from Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina on December 18, 2025, ended in tragedy as Greg Biffle’s private jet plummeted from the clouds and exploded in a nearby field. In mere seconds, a NASCAR legend, his wife, their two young children, and three others were gone.

The Cessna Citation 550 (C550), owned by Biffle’s GB Aviation Leasing LLC, departed around 10:06 a.m. bound for a family trip to Florida. Experienced pilot Dennis Dutton was at the controls, with his son Jack in the right seat. Biffle, his wife Cristina Grossu, children Emma (14) and Ryder (5), and employee Craig Wadsworth were aboard. Witnesses described the aircraft struggling shortly after takeoff. It attempted to turn back but lost altitude rapidly, striking the ground about a third of a mile from the runway before erupting into flames.

According to the NTSB preliminary report, the flight encountered multiple issues, including instrument failures, communication difficulties, and possible electrical problems. The approach back to the airport was unstabilized, and the jet impacted short of the runway. No evidence of engine failure was found, but the exact cause remains under full investigation.

In the days that followed, the NASCAR community and beyond were left reeling. Biffle, 55, was remembered not only as one of the sport’s 75 Greatest Drivers—with 19 Cup Series wins and championships in the Truck and Xfinity series—but as a devoted father, husband, and generous community leader who stepped up during Hurricane Helene relief efforts.

Friends noted the family was heading out for a simple visit, underscoring life’s fragility. Seven lives—filled with memories, speed, love, and kindness—were lost in an instant. Tributes continue to pour in for the Biffle family and the others taken too soon, as loved ones grieve and the racing world honors a legacy that will endure.
