💔Authorities Hunt Navy Reservist Suspected in Wife’s Killing

Authorities have launched an international manhunt for a U.S. Navy reservist accused of killing his wife and fleeing the country, officials said. Norfolk, Virginia, police identified the suspect as 38-year-old David Varela. Officers discovered the body of his wife, 39-year-old Lina Maria Guerra Echavarria, inside a kitchen freezer at the couple’s apartment on Feb. 5, after her family reported her missing. An autopsy on Feb. 28 ruled her death a homicide. Varela has been charged with first-degree murder and concealing a dead body.

Federal investigators allege Varela left the U.S. around Feb. 5 and flew to Hong Kong, where his phone reportedly pinged, despite having no known ties to the city. Norfolk police are coordinating with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and the FBI, which is assisting with international efforts and extradition proceedings. Authorities have requested an Interpol Red Notice to help secure his return.

Family members described Guerra Echavarria’s death as shocking, saying Varela had provided false explanations for her disappearance. Investigators have not released a motive. The search for Varela remains active, and authorities continue to urge anyone with information to come forward.
