Cameron Hamilton Fired as Acting FEMA Head After Opposing Agency Elimination

Washington, D.C. – Acting Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator Cameron Hamilton was dismissed by the Trump administration following his public testimony before Congress in which he opposed efforts to eliminate the agency and shift disaster relief responsibilities to state governments.

Hamilton’s removal, which occurred shortly after his congressional appearance, was quickly confirmed by the administration. David Richardson, a longtime FEMA official, was named as the interim replacement.

The firing highlights the administration’s commitment to reforming or diminishing FEMA’s federal role in disaster management, prioritizing state-led responses as a means to reduce bureaucracy and costs. President Trump has repeatedly criticized the agency’s spending and efficiency, arguing that states are better positioned to handle emergencies without heavy federal involvement.

Critics contend that fully devolving these responsibilities could strain state budgets and logistical capabilities, particularly in the wake of large-scale disasters. The move comes amid broader scrutiny of FEMA, including the termination of officials linked to a controversial $59 million expenditure for housing undocumented immigrants in luxury hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trump’s FEMA Reform Agenda

President Trump has long targeted FEMA for reform, framing the changes as essential for streamlining emergency response and delivering better value to taxpayers. Supporters view the shift toward greater state control as empowering local governments with on-the-ground knowledge. Opponents warn it risks undermining coordinated national disaster preparedness and response.

This development is part of ongoing efforts by the administration to reshape federal emergency management priorities. Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL, had served briefly as acting administrator before his dismissal.
