In a major escalation of Middle East tensions, Iran launched ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv, reportedly carrying cluster warheads. Iranian authorities said the strikes were retaliation for the assassination of a senior Iranian security official, attributed to Israeli forces. The attack caused flashes across central Israel, damaged infrastructure, and killed at least two civilians. Cluster munitions disperse multiple explosive submunitions over wide areas, and unexploded fragments can remain lethal long after impact, raising serious humanitarian concerns. This missile strike is part of a broader escalation that has grown since early 2026. Iran has carried out multiple attacks targeting Israeli cities, U.S. military bases, and allied facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. These operations follow high-profile assassinations of Iranian officials, which Tehran has vowed to avenge.

In retaliation, Israel and United States have carried out airstrikes targeting military and nuclear infrastructure inside Iran. Israel’s missile defenses, including Iron Dome and Arrow-3, have intercepted many missiles, but the combination of volume and cluster warheads has made full protection challenging. The conflict is already affecting global stability. Energy markets have surged following attacks on Gulf infrastructure, and diplomatic efforts have yet to halt hostilities. Both Iran and Israel continue to signal their commitment to military action, leaving the region in a state of heightened tension and uncertainty.
