America is mourning the devastating loss of a beloved gospel music family after a tragic plane crash claimed the lives of seven people on July 26, 2024. The incident occurred in a remote area near Recluse, Wyoming, as members of the award-winning group The Nelons traveled to perform on the Gaither Homecoming Cruise in Alaska.

The victims included Kelly Nelon Clark and her husband Jason Clark, their daughter Amber Nelon Kistler and Amber’s husband Nathan Kistler, family assistant Melodi Hodges (also referred to as Melanie in some early reports), and pilot Larry Haynie—chairman of the Georgia Board of Corrections—along with his wife Melissa Haynie. All seven aboard the single-engine Pilatus PC-12/47E turboprop perished when the aircraft crashed into a field, sparking a wildfire that burned approximately 38 acres. Emergency responders found the wreckage engulfed in flames, with no survivors.

The group had departed from Nebraska City Municipal Airport earlier that day, en route to Billings, Montana, as a stop before continuing to Seattle for the cruise. According to the National Transportation Safety Board’s preliminary report, the pilot reported a loss of autopilot during the final portion of the flight and declared an emergency. He told air traffic controllers he was trying to regain control of the airplane. Radio and radar contact were soon lost, and witnesses described the plane making abnormal maneuvers, including what appeared to be a barrel roll, before impact. The NTSB investigation continues, with a final determination of the probable cause still pending.

The Nelons, originally founded as the Rex Nelon Singers in 1977 by Rex Nelon, became one of Southern gospel music’s most cherished family groups after shortening their name in 1985. Kelly Nelon Clark carried forward her father’s legacy, and the quartet—known for their harmonious vocals and faith-filled messages—released over 40 projects. They earned multiple Dove Awards for Southern Gospel Album of the Year, three Grammy nominations, induction into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2016, and numerous Singing News Fan Awards. Their music, filled with themes of hope, redemption, and eternal life, touched countless lives across decades of ministry.

Autumn Nelon Streetman, the group’s fourth member and Kelly and Jason’s younger daughter, was not on the flight. Traveling separately with her husband Jamie, she was six months pregnant at the time. In an emotional statement, Autumn expressed her profound grief: “My father and mother, Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, along with my sister Amber and brother-in-law Nathan, as well as our dear friends Melodi Hodges, Larry and Melissa Haynie were involved in a tragic plane crash… Thank you for the prayers… We appreciate your continued prayers, love and support as we navigate the coming days.” She described her loss as indescribable yet leaned on faith and community for strength.

The tragedy struck just as The Nelons prepared to share their ministry on the Gaither cruise alongside other prominent Christian artists. Tributes poured in from the gospel community, with Bill and Gloria Gaither and fellow performers offering condolences and celebrating the family’s enduring legacy of love and song.

In the months following the crash, Autumn has honored her family by continuing their musical heritage. The Nelons even received a Dove Award for Southern Gospel Album of the Year in 2025, accepted by Autumn in a bittersweet moment. Their music and message of hope continue to inspire, reminding fans that while earthly voices may fall silent, faith and legacy endure.

This heartbreaking event serves as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the powerful impact of a family united in ministry. The Nelons’ story of faith, music, and unwavering love will be remembered by generations.
