‘We Caught Them’ — Speaker Johnson Goes Public, Exposes ‘Poison Pill’ Dems Tried To Sneak In

Speaker Mike Johnson says Democrats removed key Republican healthcare provisions from a recent spending bill, calling the move a “poison pill” that could keep insurance premiums high for American families. In interviews with Newsmax and Fox News, the Louisiana Republican argued that the deleted measures would have lowered healthcare costs and addressed deeper problems in the system.

Johnson said Republicans originally included cost-control provisions in their proposed “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” earlier this year. According to him, the plan would have reduced insurance premiums by about 12.7 percent. However, he said Democratic negotiators pushed to remove the provision during talks over the broader spending package. Speaking on The Record with Greta Van Susteren, Johnson criticized the current reliance on subsidies for insurance companies. He argued that continued government payments to insurers do little to reduce costs and may actually contribute to rising premiums.

The dispute comes after the House narrowly passed a continuing resolution on September 19 to keep the federal government funded and avoid a shutdown. While the measure cleared the House, broader disagreements in the Senate over funding tied to the Affordable Care Act have slowed progress. Johnson also warned that pandemic-era ACA subsidies are scheduled to expire on December 31. He said Republicans plan to introduce new policy proposals in November and December aimed at lowering healthcare costs through market reforms, competition, and greater transparency. As Congress continues negotiating government funding, the debate highlights a broader divide over how to address rising healthcare costs. Democrats generally support extending subsidies to maintain coverage levels, while Republicans argue the system requires structural reforms to bring premiums down over the long term.
