‘We Caught Them’ — Speaker Johnson Goes Public, Exposes ‘Poison Pill’ Dems Tried To Sneak In

House Speaker Mike Johnson says Democrats removed a Republican-backed healthcare provision from a major spending proposal, arguing the change eliminated a measure that could have reduced insurance premiums for millions of Americans. Speaking in interviews on Newsmax and Fox News, Johnson described the deleted language as a missed opportunity to address rising healthcare costs.

The Louisiana Republican referred to ongoing subsidies for insurance companies as a “poison pill,” claiming they inflate premiums instead of easing financial pressure on families. With enhanced pandemic-era subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act scheduled to expire on December 31, Johnson said House Republicans are preparing new proposals later this year aimed at tackling the underlying causes of high healthcare prices.

The comments come after the House narrowly approved a temporary funding measure on September 19 to keep the federal government operating. The continuing resolution passed by a 217–212 vote and would fund agencies through November 21. However, the legislation has stalled in the Senate as lawmakers debate broader questions surrounding healthcare funding and the future of ACA subsidies. Johnson argues that simply extending financial support for insurers does not solve structural problems in the healthcare system. Instead, he says Republicans want to focus on reforms that increase competition, improve transparency, and reduce market distortions that drive prices higher. According to Johnson, GOP lawmakers plan to use the coming months to develop policy ideas that could bring down premiums and make healthcare more affordable for American families.
