Alabama Gov Hospitalized After Procedure To Remove Fluid From Lung

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, 81, was hospitalized Tuesday after undergoing a minor medical procedure to remove fluid that had built up and was pressing against her lung. The governor’s office described the situation as non-emergent, but Ivey opted to address it promptly to ensure a quick recovery ahead of the final weeks of the 2026 Regular Session.

Ivey had been experiencing discomfort on her left side for approximately three weeks. She recently also felt slightly short of breath, prompting her to consult her primary care physician. The doctor recommended evaluation by a surgeon at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery, where medical staff discovered the fluid buildup. The procedure to drain the fluid was successfully performed Tuesday afternoon.

“Out of an abundance of caution, she will be monitored at Baptist South in the coming days,” her office stated. Officials emphasized that Ivey remains in communication with her staff and is focused on recuperating fully. “We are in touch with Governor Ivey, and she says she is determined to make a very speedy and full recovery,” a spokesperson added.

The timing of the procedure was intentional. Ivey is term-limited and cannot seek re-election this year, but she aims to remain actively involved in wrapping up legislative business. “While it was not emergent, Governor Ivey wanted to get the procedure done as soon as possible so she can quickly get back to 100% to wrap up the 2026 Regular Session,” the statement explained. No specific discharge timeline has been released, and her office pledged to provide timely updates on her condition.

Support poured in from political leaders across the region. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall expressed gratitude that Ivey was receiving care and joined many Alabamians in praying for her swift recovery. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp offered similar sentiments, noting, “She has always been a fighter and we know she’ll fight through this too.” Messages of encouragement continued from officials in Alabama and neighboring states.

This health episode comes years after Ivey’s previous battle with lung cancer. In 2019, she announced she was undergoing radiation treatment, and by 2020 her office confirmed the treatment was successful, declaring her cancer-free.

As of now, no major changes have been announced to Ivey’s official schedule beyond the necessary recovery period. Lawmakers have indicated that work on the legislative session will continue without interruption while the governor recuperates.

Ivey has served as Alabama’s governor since 2017, earning a reputation for resilience and steady leadership. Her office continues to monitor the situation closely, with hopes for a rapid return to full duties as the session draws to a close.
