Dangerous Escalation in the Persian Gulf: Reports of Iranian Attacks on US Bases

Iranian state television, citing military sources, has announced a major attack on US military bases across the Persian Gulf region. According to the reports, Iranian forces launched ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones targeting key installations, prompting urgent safety measures in several Gulf countries.

Local authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Qatar have urged citizens to stay indoors and avoid military zones. A powerful explosion was reported near Abu Dhabi, with the UAE temporarily closing its airspace. Iranian missiles reportedly targeted Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE, a critical hub for US air operations, leading to large explosions and activation of advanced air defenses including THAAD systems.

In Bahrain’s capital Manama, smoke rose over the Al Jufair area, home to the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters, following claims of an Iranian strike on the facility. Qatar’s Interior Ministry issued shelter-in-place orders after a Patriot missile system reportedly intercepted incoming threats aimed at Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East and headquarters for US Central Command. Qatari airspace was also closed as a precaution.

These incidents come amid the ongoing 2026 Iran war, which erupted in late February after US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Iran has responded with repeated waves of attacks on US bases hosted by Gulf allies as part of its “horizontal escalation” strategy. While Gulf and US air defenses have intercepted many projectiles, some strikes have caused damage to infrastructure, debris fallout, and occasional civilian impacts.

The attacks occur against the backdrop of a fragile two-week ceasefire agreed between the US and Iran around April 7–8, aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, reports of continued missile and drone activity suggest the truce remains shaky, with risks of further escalation. The situation is developing rapidly, with information subject to the fog of war and competing narratives from involved parties.
