Secret Service Increases Security at Mar-a-Lago Amid Iran Escalation

The U.S. Secret Service has heightened its security posture around Mar-a-Lago and other protected sites in response to escalating tensions following joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran.

In a statement released on February 28, 2026, the agency said it is closely monitoring developments in the Middle East while coordinating with federal and local law enforcement. “The U.S. Secret Service is actively monitoring the situation in Iran and remains in close coordination with our federal and local partners,” officials said. The agency’s protective model is flexible to adapt to the current environment and safeguard protectees, sites, and surrounding communities.

The move comes after a major escalation overseas. On February 28, U.S. and Israeli forces launched coordinated airstrikes—dubbed Operation Epic Fury—targeting Iranian military infrastructure, missile sites, and leadership compounds. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the initial wave of attacks in Tehran, along with several senior officials and IRGC commanders. Iran retaliated with missile and drone strikes against U.S. and Israeli targets in the region, resulting in reported casualties on both sides.

No specific domestic threats linked to the overseas operations have been publicly identified. However, federal agencies routinely bolster protections during periods of geopolitical instability, especially when the president is directly involved in major military decisions. President Trump was at Mar-a-Lago when he authorized the strikes.

The Secret Service declined to detail specific measures for operational security but noted that the public may observe a stronger law enforcement and federal presence near protected locations. “While we do not discuss our specific protective measures… the public may notice an increased law enforcement and federal presence around U.S. Secret Service protected sites,” the statement read. Any temporary traffic or pedestrian disruptions would be announced by local partners.

Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club and residence in Palm Beach, Florida, remains a high-profile protected site. The heightened alert follows a serious security breach there earlier in February. On February 22, 21-year-old Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina breached the perimeter at the north gate around 1:30 a.m., carrying a shotgun and a gas can. Confronted by Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy, he set down the gas can but raised the shotgun. Officers fired, killing him. His family had reported him missing, and no motive has been conclusively determined.

This incident, combined with prior assassination attempts against Trump during the 2024 campaign, has kept security concerns elevated. Officials emphasize that adjustments are precautionary and part of standard protocols in a fluid threat environment.

As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve—with reports of a fragile ceasefire emerging in early April—federal authorities say they will maintain adaptable protections to ensure safety.
