Nebraska Senator Mike McDonnell Switches to Republican Party Over Pro-Life Dispute. Omaha State Senator Mike McDonnell announced he has changed his party affiliation to the Republican Party after nearly 40 years as a Democrat, citing conflicts over his pro-life stance. A former firefighter and labor union leader, McDonnell said his Roman Catholic beliefs on the sanctity of life increasingly clashed with Democratic leadership.

“Today I’m announcing I am now going to be a registered Republican in the state of Nebraska,” McDonnell stated. He said Democratic officials in Douglas County restricted his participation in party activities, withdrew support, and ultimately censured him. The Nebraska Democratic Party disputed his account. Chair Jane Kleeb said the censure reflected broader party principles, emphasizing a commitment to reproductive rights and LGBTQ protections.

McDonnell’s party switch has potential legislative consequences. With 33 Republicans in the 49-member unicameral legislature, the GOP now holds the votes needed to overcome filibusters, shifting the balance of power in the state.
