Obama-Era CNN Segment Highlights Shift in Media Coverage of ICE Operations
Social media users have resurfaced a 2016 CNN report that offers a stark contrast to more recent portrayals of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), showing the agency embedded in action during the Obama administration.
On May 31, 2016, CNN Justice Correspondent Pamela Brown joined ICE agents in Chicago for an exclusive ride-along as they conducted early-morning arrests of individuals in the country illegally with criminal records. Titled “A Day with ICE in the ‘Sanctuary City’ of Chicago,” the segment depicted agents fanning out before sunrise in neighborhoods described as “sketchy,” aiming to apprehend targets before they left for work.
“Just before the sun rises in the Windy City, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents fan out across Chicago to arrest criminals in the U.S. illegally,” Brown reported. “CNN was granted exclusive access to witness some of those raids.”
Footage showed agents navigating confusion during one operation, mistakenly detaining a target’s brother before identifying and arresting the correct individual. The report also highlighted ICE’s concerns with Cook County’s sanctuary policies, which limited cooperation between local police and federal officials. On-screen graphics noted that ICE viewed the ordinances as endangering communities by releasing undocumented criminals back onto the streets.
The segment followed agents through the process, including surveillance of a second target who had re-entered the U.S. using a fake identity. Brown explained the steps involved: processing, fingerprinting, questioning, and eventual deportation proceedings.
The resurfaced report has fueled online discussions about changes in media framing of immigration enforcement. Under the Obama administration, CNN’s coverage included direct access to ICE operations and acknowledgment of challenges posed by sanctuary jurisdictions. Critics argue this tone shifted notably in subsequent years amid heightened political rhetoric.
CNN has since revisited the 2016 footage, with Brown describing the agents as professional and respectful while noting how protests and rhetoric have complicated operations today.
The 2016 segment remains available in CNN’s archives as part of a two-part series examining immigration enforcement from multiple perspectives.
