FEMA Acting Administrator Cameron Hamilton Dismissed After Testifying Against Agency Elimination

Washington, D.C. — The Trump administration has dismissed Cameron Hamilton, the acting head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), following his public testimony before Congress opposing efforts to eliminate or significantly diminish the agency’s role.

Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL who had been serving as acting administrator, was removed shortly after he testified that FEMA should not be dismantled, directly contradicting the administration’s push to transfer greater disaster relief responsibilities to state governments. The White House swiftly confirmed the decision, naming longtime FEMA official David Richardson as the interim replacement.

The move highlights the administration’s commitment to reducing federal oversight in disaster management and addressing what it describes as inefficiencies and wasteful spending at FEMA. President Trump has long criticized the agency’s operational costs and performance, advocating for states to take a larger lead in emergency responses as a means to improve efficiency and cut federal expenditures.

This dismissal comes amid broader scrutiny of FEMA, including the termination of officials linked to controversial expenditures, such as a reported $59 million in payments for housing undocumented immigrants in luxury hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Critics of the administration’s approach argue that shifting responsibilities to states could strain resources in regions prone to large-scale disasters, while supporters view it as a necessary step toward fiscal responsibility and localized control. The administration has framed the changes as part of a broader restructuring effort rather than outright elimination.

Hamilton’s removal marks another high-profile personnel shift at the agency as the Trump administration advances its America First agenda on government streamlining.
