Powerful 7.7-Magnitude Earthquake Devastates Myanmar and Shakes Southeast Asia

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025, at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time, unleashing widespread destruction across the region. The shallow quake, with its epicenter near Sagaing, just northwest of Myanmar’s second-largest city Mandalay, ruptured along the Sagaing Fault and lasted around 80 seconds. Its proximity to the surface amplified the intense shaking, affecting millions and compounding challenges in a country already facing political instability and humanitarian crises.

The earthquake hit during the daytime, catching many residents off guard as buildings swayed and collapsed. Initial reports described chaotic scenes in Mandalay, Sagaing, and surrounding areas, where homes, monasteries, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure crumbled. Nearly 50,000 residential buildings were destroyed or severely damaged, along with critical roads, bridges, and even parts of Naypyidaw’s new airport. Strong tremors were felt across northern Thailand, southwestern China (Yunnan), and parts of Vietnam, with a high-rise under construction collapsing in Bangkok, adding to the regional toll.

As of later assessments, the disaster claimed over 3,600 lives in Myanmar, with some estimates reaching 5,000 or higher, and more than 5,000–11,000 injuries reported. Hundreds remained missing. In Thailand, dozens died, primarily from the building collapse. The United Nations estimated that up to 17–28 million people across affected regions needed urgent assistance, including food, water, shelter, and medical care. Thousands were displaced, with entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble.

Emergency responders faced immense challenges navigating damaged roads, mountainous terrain, and disrupted communications. Hospitals quickly filled with the injured, while rescue teams worked around the clock to search for survivors amid aftershocks, including a strong magnitude 6.7 tremor shortly after the main event. International aid began arriving as Myanmar’s authorities declared a state of emergency in multiple regions and appealed for global support.

Strong earthquakes like this highlight vulnerabilities in areas with older or non-seismically designed structures. Officials urged residents to avoid damaged buildings and stay alert for aftershocks. Aid groups, local communities, and international partners continue coordinating relief efforts to provide shelter, medical supplies, and rebuilding support. While immediate rescue operations have largely transitioned to recovery, the full economic impact—estimated in billions of dollars—and long-term reconstruction needs remain significant.

Updates on recovery progress and further assessments continue to emerge as the region rebuilds from this historic disaster, one of Myanmar’s deadliest in over a century.
